Mastering electrically conductive bonding of flexible electronics

We are already living in a “smart” environment today, characterized by convenient, electronically controlled equipment and everyday objects that integrate versatile and, most importantly, electronic functionalities. These include, for example, transparent and flexible photovoltaics, smart cards with sensor functions, light and flexible displays, “intelligent” clothing, packaging and many more. At this point we are in the field of flexible electronics, which offers various advantages over a conventional approach. Products suddenly become flexible, they can be folded or even rolled up. With this new property, they become more durable, thus resource-saving and allow unusual product designs that go far beyond the use of conventional electronics.

In general, electrically conductive bonding has proven itself successful in electronics for many years and is also available for higher performance classes, supported by new development in adhesives and substrate materials. In contrast to conventional joining techniques such as soldering, adhesives allow assembling difficult material combinations and avoid undesirable effects such as deformation or discoloration. Two of the biggest advantages are the relatively low process temperature and the low process complexity. In addition, bonded connections are generally more flexible than solder joints and thus better withstand the oscillations and vibrations that may occur. Conductive adhesives are therefore the perfect candidates when it comes to flexible electronics.

Our electrically conductive adhesives are largely based on epoxy resin systems, which are available either as two-component systems or premixed and frozen as one-component variants. In addition to epoxies, Polytec PT’s range of conductive adhesives also features single-component polyurethanes that are highly flexible and therefore are of particular interest specifically for use in the field of flexible electronics. These products can be cured at moderate temperatures or simply at room temperature.

Polytec PT offers a wide range of electrically conductive adhesives suitable for all common application techniques. Starting from conductive silver adhesives for manual application in prototype or sample production up to fully automated assembly processes with adhesive application by dispensing, screen printing, jetting or stamping.
